Our Lovely Honey Bees

We saw a programme last night on  A Current Affair that was really disturbing. 

Our honey bees worldwide have a virus.  It appears that it is like a tick and sucks the blood out of the bees.  It also gets on the bee and is carried into the hive.  This decimates the hive.  Bee hives are collapsing all around the world, though they dealt mainly with the problems in America.

At the moment, Australia is the only country that is free.  However, the experts seem to think that it is not a case of "if" we get it but "when".  New Zealand was free but has now got it, and that is not very far from our mainland.

The impact of losing our bees is horrific.  No bees, mean that our crops will not be pollinated.  No crops mean no food for us.  We are dependant on our bees to survive.  It was said that if the bees die out, then we will have no food within 5 years. 

At the moment, Australia is exporting our bees to America to help them.  One nut farm uses over 5,000 bees to pollinate their trees.  It was said that it has affected 80% of the hives there.

If anyone has ever doubted that we are not just one part of this big picture, maybe they need to think again.  Everything on earth is interelated.  When we lose a species, the consequences are devastating!  Man must rethink his ways.

Between the GM problems and bees and this new virus, it doesn't look too good for mankind does it?
