KEEPING CHOOKS.
We were talking to a friend of ours Judy Wilkinson from Coonabarabran. She was recalling how her Dad fed his commercial chooks. We have given the recipe as she can remember it below. We thought it might be interesting to compare how chooks were fed back in the 1950's to now.
Equal parts of Bran and Pollard
Meat Meal about 1/3 of the mix
Molasses mixed with hot water for winter and cold water for summer.
Some mown grass clippings as green feed.
Mix all together and feed to chooks.
Remember that these hens were in a shed, as were most chooks way back then. It is interesting to note that the meat meal would replace the insects and grubs that free range chooks would get as would the grass clippings. Not sure what the molasses does.
We are not suggesting that you use the recipe but sometimes the old timers knew things we didn't.
