What's Happening At Our Place May 2008

Since talking to you last, we have had some rain.  Surely welcome as you will remember, we had run out of water completely and had to buy some in.

Some of the plants around the house have not made it, despite carting water to them.  At the moment, our orange tree which has been here probably since the house was moved here (about 30 years ago) is looking quite sick.  All its leaves are turned inside out as it were.  It needs a lot of water and we continually pray for rain.

Many of our neighbours have put in winter crops and are waiting anxiously for the next drop of rain. 

Fortunately for us, we have plenty of grass for the horses and they look as fat as mud.  We have not been feeding them as feed here has risen so dramatically.  Barley which was about $8.00 per bag has gone up to over $20.00 and lucerne hay is now around the $18.00 mark per bale.  We find that ludicrous as most lucerne hay is irrigated anyway and their costs have not risen that much.  However, there will always be people who want to make a quick buck.  Sad really, as they are not the people you would do business with over a long term.   It is rather short sighted to fleece people as when conditions change, people will be very wary of doing business with them.

Renovations on the house have come to a bit of a standstill as money is being used elsewhere.  Still I am painting a frieze on the grand children's bedroom of the teddy bear's picnic.  They love it and each time they come over they enjoy the next bit.

Our new vegetable garden is taking shape.  Lots of mulch and manure to help everything along.  Anyway, must get motivated and fix up the rest of the garden!
