WHAT'S HAPPENING AT OUR PLACE September 2006

Well, our first big news is that the first filly foal of the season was born last night (22.9.06) to our mare who we call Gabby.  Her proper name is Literary Disaster, which makes for some interesting names for the foal.  It is only her second foal and she managed to do it with ease.  For those who are not horsey, a filly foal is a female foal.

She didn't get to use the new foaling yard that we are going to trial.  It is made of PVC.  The fence materials only arrived yesterday.  Somehow, the carrier managed to lose the package.  Now this package is about 3 metres long by about 2 metres wide, and weighed about 400 kg.  How could you misplace a package this size?

We are back to being very dry.  We are getting very hot winds which is drying out the soil.  The winds are not abnormal as it is often windy in August/September but they are never this hot.  It does not look good for the fire season coming up.  Our hottest weather is usually over Christmas up until February.  If it is tinder dry now  and so warm, it looks like this summer will be very hard to bear for our animals.  We do have a conservation programme for our wildlife.  Go to Sponsor An Acre to see.

The renovations are going well.  Vic has been lifting the old floorboards up and relaying them.  Two reasons, they are the nice old 6 inch boards and because they are not tongue and grooved, they had reasonably size gaps between them.  Interesting enough, during this process in one room, we found that one of the bearers was broken.  So that has now been fixed and the floor levelled.  Not sure what means they used to level the floor before but it does dip in some places.  The house was moved to this spot 30 odd years ago, and put on new stumps.  Some of these seem to be lower than others when you get to look under the floor.

Anyway until next time.
